METHODS OF DOCUMENTATION AND MEASURED DRAWINGS

| ARC60305 |

In this short semester, the project is divided into three parts. The first stage was to carry out our site visit. The main key of this trip is to measure the given building, to allow us to come out with our measured drawings, and also a better understanding of the construction and background of the building itself. After the 6 days and 5 nights of site visit, we have to produce a sketch journal about our building individually.

Other than the sketch journal, we also had to come out with a video, documenting our building and telling the viewers what is the building all about. We were given the freedom to have our own theme of filming the video. The video presentation was the second part of the project.

Lastly, we had to also produce a report, documenting all aspects of the building, a photo book consisting 50 pictures of the building,measured drawings and finally our model.

The first task was an individual task whereby we have to document information about our building. A few aspects that we were allowed touch on, such as the cultural attributes, the genius loci, the construction method. This project aims to allow us to have a better understanding on our building through our experience on site and also our research findings.

|| PART 2: Video Presentation

The video style that we chose was a simpler approach. A simple documentation to reflect the simple living of the people in a traditional Malay house. We shot the house and the spaces, with some narrative to let viewers have a in depth understanding of the house.

|| The Photo Book

The pictures in the photo book properly captures the spatial quality, the construction aspects and also the elements that has reflected the cultural background of the house itself. It aims to allow viewers to experience the on-site feeling we felt without the need to be physically there.

|| The Measured Drawings.

The divided our job scope based on the tupes of drawings, Site plan, Floor plans, Elevations, Sections, Axonometric, and Detail drawings. Due to the two houses that was given to us, we were divided into two teams, with had 5 people per team to work on the drawings. We managed to get the drawings done accordingly.

REFLECTION

This project is a small glimpse of the reality of my passion. The whole experience on-site, started off from measuring each and every part of the building, together with the team, and then heading back to draw whatever we measured, the whole journey has been a valuable lesson for me. Even though it started off clueless, but as we go on, we slowly grasp along every new lesson and experience we had.

I was grateful that we got to learn AutoCAD in this semester, when we only had a module to focus on, and spared some free time to learn new things. In this short semester, it forces myself to grab hold as much as I can in order to help the team, and contribute my work in it. Even though that it was new, and it may not be the best work, but I'm glad that the mixture with seniors as team members happened, enabling me to learn so much from them. The seniors has been a great example, observing the way they work, the approach they took in handling situations, is something I could learn so much from.

One of the things I've learnt in this project is also knowing how to be adaptable to all sorts of situation. This time, we faced quite an amount issues, one of them which is the last minute change of site. We were quite worried at first, knowing that our previous research before the site visit has gone to waste, and also swapped the initial building that had so much stories behind it, with two ordinary traditional houses. But we manage to handle the situation pretty well, accepting the given task and move forward. We underestimated the building that was given to us. Even though it has a certain simplicity in the building, but we faced our own difficulties, and also got to learn so much about the traditional Malay houses, things that we always took for granted of and never known of.

I enjoyed this project in the sense that we needed to pick up knowledge and skills in this short period of time, being able to work with people and communicate our ideas, being able to try and error and learn from our every failure. Lastly, never compare ourselves with other groups. Never be influenced by other people, as long as we work towards the goal and the requirement given, because each and everyone of us is different and has our own way of working. It is a reminder to myself not to be defined by how other people work or how people judge, as long as we got to be clear with what we're doing.

At the end of the day, when I saw the drawings, the report, the photo book, and also the final model, I was satisfied and happy. It was a flashback of all the things I've been through and learnt. It was a memorable semester indeed.
