BUILDING SCIENCE I

| BLD60803 |

In this module, we were exposed to the understanding of the importance of thermal comfort in buildings, which directed us into different knowledge that co-relates with the topic such as how heat contributes to the internal environment, understanding the ways to avoid and prevent the transfer of heat, how to sustain a comfortable environment, introduction and implementations of passive design strategies, understanding how the environment factors in affecting spaces and so much more.

|| The Brief

In the project, we had to form a group of 7 people. The objective is to select a location in Taylor's University, with the requirement of a room, and covered on top. Our site was the Master's Architectural Studio and the public walkway beside the studio.

We had to analyze the chosen space, with the addition of site analysis, which comprises of the meteorological data, wind rose, sun path, thermal and humidity analysis. After the analysis, we had to come out with passive design strategies, solutions to solve the current condition, and improve its condition to a more comfortable state. Both site analysis and passive design strategies has to be consolidated in an A2 board, filled front and back.

REFLECTION

This module gave a new perspectives of design approach in architecture. In the previous semesters, our scope in design and thinking process has always been lying more towards the abstract kind of approach, without considerations of other external factors, such as the environmental aspect, the energy efficiency and more. Thus, this module has gave us a platform to expose to knowledge that requires more thinking and considerations of the environment and the comfort of the occupants by introducing passive design strategies. By understanding the importance in the various aspects of consideration in design, it broadens our perspective and has gave us more options and a more developed thinking while undergoing the design process.

The biggest take away from this module is that, the project taught me how passive designs could contribute, not only improving its efficiency and indoor environment, by it aids in producing an aesthetically pleasing piece of work in architecture. With the application of knowledge and improvisation in design, architecture becomes more interesting and adds on to how its not just solely about its story behind its design, but it's connection with the contribution towards the environmental impact. This module gave me so much insight and I gradually learn how to appreciate the beauty in passive designs, an incorporation of devices and measures that improves conditions to a more comfortable state without the use of additional energy.

This module gave me a realization of how architecture should attempt more in implementation of passive strategies which enhances the quality of the architecture with its site. In my final architectural design studio III, I've attempted to apply ways that could improve the quality of the building itself and also the internal space. One of the strategies that I've attempted to apply in my design is to decrease the energy consumption in air conditioners, allowing to building to be natural ventilated through out the spaces, shading devices such as overhang roofs, the light weight materials in construction of building and more The exploration in the knowledge that we acquired from this module while completing our final design studio, it made architecture more meaningful and has provided new ways that could enhance the design by implementations of passive design strategies.
